Debbie O'Meara

Founder and Practitioner

Debbie’s journey began in 2008 when she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease. At that time, her doctor recommended three options: radiation, surgically removing her thyroid, or suppressing her immune system with pharmaceutical therapy. She was not interested in any of these options and asked if there was anything else she could do. After some hesitation, her doctor told her she could try making lifestyle changes.

Although he did not have studies to fully support this approach, he had read preliminary research suggesting it might help. Debbie told him she wanted to pursue this option, and he agreed — as long as he could closely monitor her thyroid function.

That day marked the beginning of Debbie’s search for nutrition-based answers. Her genetics and family history of autoimmune disease didn’t predict a positive outcome, and many people thought she was unrealistic for turning to nutrition. But Debbie was determined to be the exception.

She spent several months studying the immune system and its connection to nutrition, all while holding onto her faith that God would guide her toward the right answers. In 2010, her bloodwork returned to normal, showing no signs of Graves’ disease. Needless to say, her doctor was impressed. Debbie was thrilled and believed she had finally overcome her health struggles — she thought she had beaten the odds.

Unfortunately, Debbie later learned that her dietary changes had only temporarily calmed her immune system. In 2012, she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Devastated, she once again turned to lifestyle approaches and began studying the effects of microorganisms in the body.

She went back to school and earned her degree in functional medicine and integrative nutrition, adding to her BS in nutrition science. Through this training, she discovered the root cause of her symptoms. By running targeted labs, she identified bacterial imbalances, gut dysbiosis, and infections that were driving her autoimmunity.

Today, Debbie is free of autoimmunity.

Debbie founded Autoimmune Angels because she experienced complete healing through functional medicine. She wants you to know that there is hope for you, too.
